OpenRev vs Matomo
Matomo describes itself as “Privacy-first analytics you can trust”
The short answer
Matomo is a full-featured, GPL-licensed alternative to Google Analytics that you can self-host for free (On-Premise) or use on Matomo Cloud, with data stored in Germany. It reports ecommerce revenue from orders your site sends. OpenRev is narrower and revenue-first: it takes payments straight from your payment provider and credits each one to the visitor and channel that brought it in.

The main differences
Scope
Matomo aims to replace Google Analytics, with custom reports, heatmaps, session recording and more. OpenRev is a focused revenue dashboard.
Revenue
Matomo attributes ecommerce revenue to channels, but your site has to send each order (an order ID and total) from its confirmation page or through the Tracking API. It doesn't connect to payment providers. OpenRev receives payments from 11 providers by signed webhook.
What's free when self-hosted
Matomo On-Premise is free, but funnels, user flows, custom reports, heatmaps and session recording are paid plugins. Everything in OpenRev is free when self-hosted, under the MIT license.
Cookies and consent
Matomo sets first-party cookies by default and can turn them off or hold them until consent. OpenRev stores a first-party visitor ID by default and has a cookieless mode per site.
Which one fits you
Choose Matomo if
- You want a full Google Analytics-style tool with custom reports, heatmaps and session recording.
- You want EU cloud hosting with data stored in Germany.
- You want cookie handling that waits for consent built in.
Choose OpenRev if
- You want revenue from your payment provider without ecommerce tracking code.
- You want funnels and visitor journeys without paying for plugins.
- You want to run on Cloudflare's free plan.
Switching from Matomo
Run OpenRev next to Matomo while you compare. Matomo goals become OpenRev goals, and orders no longer need tracking code once your payment provider is connected. Matomo history isn't imported.
