OpenRev vs PostHog
PostHog describes itself as “Your product's context layer”
The short answer
PostHog is a broad product platform: product and web analytics, session replay, feature flags, experiments, error tracking and more, used mostly on its cloud with usage-based pricing and a large free tier. OpenRev does one thing: revenue-first web analytics that you host yourself, with 11 payment providers built in. PostHog's revenue analytics is in beta and supports only Stripe.

The main differences
Scope
PostHog bundles many products for product and engineering teams. OpenRev focuses on one question for founders and marketers: which channels, campaigns and pages bring in money.
Revenue
PostHog's revenue analytics is in beta and supports Stripe only. To link Stripe revenue to people, you add PostHog IDs to Stripe metadata, and its documented revenue breakdowns are product, coupon, customer, country and amount. OpenRev has 11 providers built in, links payments through checkout metadata, automatically tagged payment links, success-page detection or the customer's email, and reports revenue by channel, referrer, campaign, page, country and device.
Self-hosting
PostHog's self-hosted deploy is a free hobby setup without support that runs on a single machine, and all paid-plan features are Cloud-only. OpenRev is built to be self-hosted, on Cloudflare, Docker or Node.js.
Price
PostHog is free up to 1M events a month, then billed per event, with optional platform packages from $250/month. OpenRev's software is free; you pay only your host.
Which one fits you
Choose PostHog if
- You want session replay, feature flags, experiments or error tracking in the same tool as your analytics.
- You're a product team analysing what signed-in users do in your app.
- You'd rather use a managed cloud with a large free tier.
Choose OpenRev if
- You want revenue by marketing channel, from Stripe or any of 10 other providers.
- You want analytics built to be self-hosted, on Cloudflare's free plan, Docker or Node.js.
- You want a focused revenue dashboard rather than a product-analytics suite.
Switching from PostHog
The two can run side by side, with PostHog for product analytics and OpenRev for revenue by channel. Add OpenRev's script and connect your payment provider. PostHog history isn't imported.
OpenRev and PostHog: questions
Does PostHog have revenue attribution?
PostHog's revenue analytics is in beta and supports Stripe, or revenue events you send yourself. To link Stripe revenue to people you add PostHog IDs to Stripe metadata. OpenRev has 11 payment providers built in and reports revenue by channel, campaign, page, country and device.
Can I self-host PostHog?
There is a free, MIT-licensed Docker Compose deploy, but PostHog calls it a hobby deploy without support, it runs on one machine, and paid-plan features are Cloud-only. OpenRev is built to be self-hosted on Cloudflare, Docker or Node.js.
Can I use PostHog and OpenRev together?
